After reading about the CCWBRA in the Chesapeake Bay Magazine last fall, SYC has a half-dozen retirees who have built their own race boats to CCWBRA specifications for their first invitational Governor’s Cup race at the Smyrna Yacht Club on August 23, 2014.

SYC has a long and rich history of powerboat racing: On Armistice Day, November 11th, 1928, just a few weeks after the club was organized, the first regatta was held.  This was in the “Roaring Twenties” and the country was flush with wealth and optimism.  Anything to do with motors and speed was popular.  The first SYC Commodore, Russ J. Christy, eventually became Commodore of the American Power Boat Association.

The regattas were held on Armistice Day for the following years: 1929, 1930, and 1931, and were given primarily for the entertainment of the people of Volusia County and adjoining territory, up to 1932.  In 1932, the Regatta was held on Washington’s Birthday and the main event of that occasion was the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy race.  This race was won by Walter Widegren of Glen Cove, N.Y. The replica of the trophy was presented to Mr. Widegren by Sir Malcolm Campbell, and attracted International attention. The 1933 Regatta was held on March 11th and 12th. The main event of that Regatta was the Governor Dave Sholtz Trophy which was won by Horace Tennes of Chicago Illinois, who, at the time, broke the world’s amateur record for outboard motor racing.  The success of the 1932 and 1933 races attracted the attention of the officials of the national association and of motor boat racers of foreign countries, and as a result, New Smyrna was invited to participate in the International Races which are being held this year at New Smyrna, Palm Beach and Miami.

The following is from the printed program for the 1934 regatta, Daytona Beach Morning Journal, Saturday February 13, 1937 - “ Smyrna Feb 12 -  Daring drivers crouched in rickety racing outboard motorboats, will stake their skill against possible injury and Old Davey Jones himself tomorrow as New Smyrna’s ninth annual regatta gets underway.    …  Gar Wood, Jr., teen age son of the famed racing boat pilot who holds more records than you can shake a stick at, is back in New Smyrna ready to compete…”

On the weekend of August 22nd to 24th, you can compete to have your name associated with the same, historic Governor Dave Sholtz Trophy. Also, while a registered CCWBRA competitor, you and your family/guests will have complete access to all SYC amenities (dining, Tiki Bar, tennis, pool, etc.) for the weekend.

Since the 1990’s SYC has conducted the prestigious Lipton Cup sailing regatta and is looking forward to adding The Governor’s Cup to it competitive racing offerings!
