Building a Tradition

On April 25 - 27, 2008, the Smyrna Yacht Club (SYC) is continuing its historic Lipton Cup Regatta. A series of offshore races will be held in the Atlantic Ocean just outside the Ponce De Leon Inlet.

In addition to racing enthusiasts, SYC is hoping to attract many of the cruising boats in the area and that pass through New Smyrna Beach. All with an appropriate sailing vessel are invited to participate.

Location

Smyrna Yacht Club is located on the ICW only a few miles south of Ponce de Leon Inlet which is just south of Daytona Beach, Florida; ICW Mile Marker 847 Lat:N.29°01' | Lon:W.80°55'.

A Breeze and Sunshine

Expect a ten to fifteen knot breeze, sunshine, competitive sailing, and fun for all! Join with SYC for a weekend of sailing and festivities.

Weather

The central Florida weather in April is usually mild. Occasional frontal systems affect the weather but stay well to the north. With a little luck, expect sunshine and a lively 10-15 knot breeze.

Offshore Racing

The regatta will accommodate four offshore racing classes: The races will be around an approximately ten mile triangular course plus a windward leeward finish. Registration will be $75.00 for the entire weekend. There will be two races on Saturday, and a third race on Sunday.

Racing Classes:

  • Class I: Boats with unlimited sails, including spinnakers.
  • Class II - Boats with all sails without spinnakers.
  • Class III - Cruising boats.
  • PHRF handicapping system.

A Fun Weekend

Racers will be welcomed with a cocktail party at the club's Tiki Hut on Friday evening. A Dinner will be held on Saturday evening (per person charge). The awards presentation will be on Sunday at Happy Hour after the race. A cash bar will be available for all events. All participants, crews and families are welcome. Come sail with us and have a really good time.

The Tradition

Sir Thomas Lipton is famous for his many America's Cup Challenges. In 1922, he donated a beautiful sterling cup to perpetuate the sport of yacht racing in the Central Florida area. In 1941, at the beginning of World War II, the cup was placed in a bank vault for safety and forgotten until 1982. At that time, having sponsored International Lipton Cup regattas in the early 1930's, SYC adopted the cup in order to preserve the tradition. SYC held Lipton Cup Regattas periodically until 1989. Because of the historical importance of the Cup, and the desire to carry out the vision of Sir Thomas Lipton, SYC is sponsoring this prestigious international event.
